Learn about myths you should avoid
- Myth: The flames of a fire cause the most casualties. Fact: Smoke is usually the reason for injuries or death
- Myth: You have 5 minutes to escape your house fire. Fact: In 30 seconds a fire can get out of control. It only takes a minute for a fire to double in size.
- Myth: If you smell smoke you have enough time to escape. Fact: Smoke rarely wakes people up, this is why we have smoke detectors.
- Myth: If someone is trapped inside a house fire and the firefighters aren’t on the scene you should rescue the person. Fact: You will put yourself in danger and make the firefighter’s job twice as hard, stay out!
- Myth: Newer homes are less likely to catch fire than old homes. Fact: Newer homes may have engineered lumber and synthetic furnishings that make them prone to fire.
